SPF Explained: Why Sunscreen Is the #1 Skincare Step You Shouldn’t Skip
What You Need to Know About SPF & Why It’s the Foundation of Great Skin
If there’s one skincare step I recommend to every single person—regardless of age, skin type, or season—it’s daily SPF. Sunscreen isn’t just for beach days or summer hikes; it’s your skin’s everyday shield against long-term damage.
Here’s why SPF matters, how it actually works, and how to choose the best one for your skin.
Why SPF Is Non-Negotiable:
SPF (short for Sun Protection Factor) protects your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays—specifically UVA and UVB radiation.
☀️ UVB rays cause sunburn.
☀️ UVA rays go deeper, causing premature aging, pigmentation, and skin cancer.
Even on cloudy days, or through windows and screens, UV rays are at work. Over time, daily sun exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, leads to wrinkles, dark spots, and uneven texture—and increases the risk of skin cancer.
In fact, studies show that 80–90% of visible skin aging is caused by sun exposure. That means your sunscreen is your most powerful anti-aging product.
How SPF Works:
SPF products either absorb UV rays (chemical filters) or reflect them (physical/mineral filters). Many formulas today use a blend of both for better coverage and cosmetic elegance.
-
Mineral SPFs (like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sit on the surface and deflect rays.
-
Chemical SPFs (like avobenzone or octinoxate) absorb rays and convert them into heat.
When applied properly, SPF absorbs or deflects UV radiation so it can’t damage your skin’s DNA or trigger inflammation.
But for SPF to work, it has to be used correctly.
✔ Apply a generous layer—more than you think!
✔ Reapply every 2–3 hours if you’re outside or sweating
✔ Make it the final step in your morning skincare routine (before makeup)
What SPF Number Should You Use?
SPF 30 is the minimum daily recommendation.
-
SPF 30 blocks ~97% of UVB rays
-
SPF 50 blocks ~98%
-
No sunscreen blocks 100%, so reapplication is key
For most people, SPF 30–50 is ideal for daily use. If you’re outdoors for extended time, sweating, or swimming, go higher and reapply often.
How to Choose the Right SPF for You:
Look for broad-spectrum protection (UVA + UVB), and choose a texture and finish you’ll enjoy using every day. My favourite SPF is also:
🌿 Lightweight and mineral that doesn't leave a white cast
🌿 Smells great and goes on smooth
🌿 Moisturizing to double as a daytime hydrator

Pair it with a solid skincare routine, hydration, and seasonal facials, and you’re setting your skin up for long-term radiance.
